Where your title gets cut off

Your Channel
Estimate: the title is measured with Roboto, YouTube’s font, at the sizes and widths we measured on October 30, 2026 on youtube.com (1,440-pixel-wide window) and m.youtube.com (390-pixel phone). Your screen, browser and the YouTube app may cut it a little elsewhere.

See where it gets cut
Search, grid, suggestions and mobile: what people read before “…” in each place.
Writing a title that fits
Keyword first
The end of a long title disappears behind “…”. What people search for, and the promise of the video, come first. YouTube suggests picking one or two keywords and featuring them in the title and description.
True to the video
YouTube asks for catchy titles that accurately describe the video, and to avoid misleading, clickbait or sensational titles.
Check the narrowest spot
In suggestions and on mobile, the title has less room: make sure it still makes sense there.
Capitals take up room
A word in capitals is wider than in lowercase: it gets the title cut sooner, and reads like shouting.
Title and thumbnail work together
The thumbnail shows, the title tells. No need to write the same words on the image and in the title: each can carry part of the message.
Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum YouTube title length?
100 characters, according to YouTube’s help center. A Short is a video like any other, so its title has the same limit. The tool counts your characters and warns you past the limit.
At how many characters does YouTube cut off a title?
There is no fixed number: YouTube cuts the title when it runs past two lines (three in suggestions), and the room depends on the spot, the screen and how wide the letters are. A title in capitals gets cut sooner than one in lowercase. That is why the tool measures your title instead of counting.
What is a good length for a YouTube title?
YouTube does not give an ideal length. What matters is that the keyword and the promise of the video can be read before “…” everywhere. A longer title is fine as long as the end is not essential.
Do emojis count toward the 100 characters?
Yes. The tool counts a simple emoji as one character; a combined emoji (flag, family, skin tone) is made of several characters and counts more. If the numbers differ, trust the YouTube Studio counter.
Which characters are not allowed in a YouTube title?
The “<” and “>” signs, according to YouTube’s developer documentation. The tool flags them as soon as you type them.
How can I preview my thumbnail with my title?
Add it in the tool: it shows in every preview, read on your device and never uploaded. YouTube recommends a 16:9 image for a video (9:16 for a Short), at least 640 pixels wide, in JPG or PNG, up to 2 MB from a phone and 50 MB from a computer.
Does the title matter for YouTube search?
Yes. Among what ranks a video in search, YouTube lists how well the search matches the title, description and content of the video. It suggests featuring one or two keywords in the title and description.
Can I change the title of a published video?
Yes, in YouTube Studio, from the video details. YouTube explains that a new title or thumbnail can increase views, because viewers react differently, but advises not to change what works.
Are my title or thumbnail sent anywhere?
No. Counting, measuring and the preview all happen in your browser; nothing leaves your device.
