The formula is shown with your numbers, so you know exactly where the result comes from.

How to read your engagement rate

  • Compare yourself with yourself

The same math on last month’s posts, then this month’s: that comparison tells you whether you are growing.

  • Always use the same base

A rate by views and a rate by followers do not compare. Pick one and stick with it.

  • Wait the same amount of time

A post keeps getting interactions for days. Take the numbers at the same age, for example seven days after posting.

  • Do not compare two networks

Each network counts views and interactions its own way: a TikTok rate and a LinkedIn rate do not measure the same thing.

  • Look at the detail

A hundred likes and ten comments do not say the same as an equal rate made mostly of shares or saves.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate engagement rate?

Add up a post’s interactions (likes, comments, shares, saves…), divide by followers, reach or views, then multiply by 100. Example: 120 likes, 14 comments, 9 shares and 30 saves make 173 interactions; for 2,400 followers, 173 ÷ 2,400 × 100 = 7.21%.

What is the Instagram engagement rate formula?

Instagram calls likes, comments, saves and shares “interactions”, according to its help center. Divide their sum by your followers, or by the post’s reach (the accounts that saw it), then multiply by 100. You will find these numbers in the insights under each post.

How do you calculate TikTok engagement rate?

Add up the video’s likes, comments, shares and favorites, divide by its views and multiply by 100. A TikTok video is often seen far beyond your followers, which is why it is often calculated by views; the tool also lets you use followers.

What about LinkedIn?

LinkedIn shows its own engagement rate in Page analytics: clicks, reactions, comments and shares, divided by impressions. That is the default formula here. For a personal profile, if you do not have clicks, leave the field blank.

What about YouTube?

Add up likes, comments and shares, then divide by the video’s views. Note: since August 24, 2026, YouTube counts a view as soon as the video starts playing, Shorts included, according to its help center. A rate calculated before and after that date does not compare.

What is a good engagement rate?

There is no official number: Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube do not publish one. The averages you see come from studies by software companies, each with its own formula and sample. The most reliable benchmark is your own posts, calculated the same way. On Facebook and Instagram, Meta Business Suite also compares you with businesses in your category.

Followers, reach or views: which should I use?

By followers, the rate tells you whether your community reacts; it often drops as an account grows. By reach or views, it tells you whether the people who saw the post reacted, followers or not. Pick the base you can collect every time, and keep it.

How do you calculate an account’s engagement rate?

Choose “An account” and enter the numbers of several recent posts. By followers, the tool averages interactions per post and divides by your followers. By reach or views, it divides total interactions by total reach or views. Each post’s rate is shown too.

Where do I find these numbers?

Instagram: in the insights under the post. Facebook: in Meta Business Suite insights. TikTok: in TikTok Studio, or the video’s analytics from your profile. LinkedIn: under your post. YouTube: in YouTube Studio, Analytics tab.

Are my numbers sent anywhere?

No. The math runs entirely in your browser: nothing is sent or stored.
