LinkedIn Text Formatter

Write your post, select words and make them bold, italic, underlined or crossed out. The preview shows your post as it looks in the LinkedIn feed, “see more” cut-off included.

Free, no sign-up. Your text stays in your browser: nothing is sent.

0/3,000 characters

Shortcuts: Ctrl + B for bold, Ctrl + I for italic, Ctrl + U for underline. With nothing selected, the style applies to the word under the cursor; “Plain text” with nothing selected cleans the whole post. Safe count: a bold or italic letter counts as two.

The cut-off depends on the screen and your line breaks: from what we see, LinkedIn shows about three lines before “more”. Preview widths are approximate.

How it works

  1. 1

    Write or paste your post

Right in the box, with your line breaks and emojis.

  2. 2

    Select words

Then bold, italic, underline, strikethrough or a list. Click again to remove the style.

  3. 3

    Copy and paste into LinkedIn

The formatting stays, on desktop and on mobile.

Using bold text on LinkedIn the right way

  • A few words, never the whole post

A promise, a number, the one line to remember. When everything is bold, nothing stands out and the post gets tiring to read.

  • Polish the opening

The first lines are all people see before “more”: that is where a bold word helps the most.

  • Keep keywords and hashtags plain

To search, “𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴” is not the word “marketing”. Whatever should be found stays in regular letters.

  • Think about screen readers

Blind and low-vision people listen to posts with a screen reader, which reads these special letters poorly. One bold word is fine, a whole bold sentence becomes gibberish.

  • Use space rather than styling everything

Short lines, a blank line between ideas and a bulleted list make a post easier to read than styling everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How do I bold text in a LinkedIn post?

The LinkedIn post editor has no bold button. Write your text in the tool above, select the words, click Bold, then copy the post and paste it into LinkedIn. The letters are swapped for Unicode characters that look bold, and they stay that way once pasted.

Does bold work with accented letters?

Almost: Unicode has no bold accented letters. So the tool leaves é, à, ç… regular inside a bold word: slightly thinner, but readable everywhere. Placing the accent on top of a bold letter is possible, but on some devices it slides onto the next letter (our tests on Windows show it), so we do not do it.

Can I use italic, underline or strikethrough on LinkedIn?

Yes, the same way: select the words and pick Italic, Bold italic, Underline or Strikethrough. Underline and strikethrough are lines added to each character, so their position varies a little between devices.

Can screen readers read bold LinkedIn text?

Poorly. These characters are math symbols: a screen reader may spell them out, announce their symbol names or skip them. For someone listening to the post, one bold word is fine, a whole bold paragraph becomes gibberish. Keep it to a few words.

Can LinkedIn search find bold words?

No: to a search engine, a word written with these characters is not the same word. Keep the keywords and hashtags people should find you by in plain text.

How many characters can a LinkedIn post have?

Up to 3,000 characters, according to LinkedIn’s help center, which suggests writing an article beyond that. The tool’s counter plays it safe: a bold or italic letter is stored as two units, like an emoji, so it counts as two.

Where does LinkedIn cut a post with “see more”?

After the first few lines. LinkedIn’s help center gives no number: from what we see, it is about three lines, depending on screen width and your line breaks. The preview shows the cut-off at desktop and mobile width.

How do I go back to plain text?

Select the words and click Plain text: bold, italic, underline and strikethrough are removed and accents are put back together. With nothing selected, the whole post is cleaned. Clicking Bold again also removes bold.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Formatting happens in your browser; the text never leaves your device and is not stored anywhere.
