Instagram Handle Checker

Type the username you want: we check that it follows Instagram’s rules, then one tap opens the profile on Instagram to see if it is taken. If it is, try our variations.

Free, no sign-up. Up to 80 checks a day.

Letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Up to 30 characters.

How it works

  1. 1

    Type the username

With or without the @. You can also paste a profile link and we pull out the name.

  2. 2

    See it on Instagram

The format is checked as you type. One tap opens the profile: “page isn’t available” means the name is free; a profile means it is taken.

  3. 3

    Try variations

With a period, an underscore, a number or a word like “official” or “studio”. One tap each.

What makes a good username

  • Short and easy to say

A name people can spell out loud without repeating it is easier to find.

  • The same on every network

Check TikTok too before you decide: one name everywhere is a brand people remember.

  • A word from your field

“lina.coach”, “nomad.studio”: people get what you do before they even open the profile.

  • Few symbols

One period or underscore, not three. Avoid letters that look alike, like l and 1 or O and 0.

  • Think ahead

A name tied to a city or a single offer ages fast. Your own name or your brand lasts.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if an Instagram username is available?

Type it into the tool, which checks it follows the rules, then tap Open on Instagram: if Instagram says the page isn’t available, the name is probably free; if a profile shows up, it is taken. The only real proof is to try it in Instagram, under Edit profile.

Why does Instagram refuse a name when no profile exists?

A name can belong to a deactivated account, or have been removed recently from an active account: Instagram’s help center says such a name is not always free right away. A “page isn’t available” screen does not show that, hence the “probably”.

Which characters can an Instagram username use?

Letters without accents, numbers, periods and underscores. From what we observe, 30 characters at most, no period at the start or end, and never two periods in a row. The tool checks this as you type.

The username I want is taken. What now?

Instagram’s help center suggests adding periods, numbers, underscores or abbreviations. The tool suggests variations built that way, and you can check each one in one tap.

Does a private account count as taken?

Yes: a private account hides its posts, not its profile page. Open the link and you see the profile: the name is taken.

How do I change my Instagram username?

Open your profile, tap Edit profile, then Username. If your account reaches a lot of people, Instagram may review the change first, and your followers may be notified.

Can I get an old username back?

According to Instagram’s help center, yes in most cases, as long as nobody else has taken it and it has not been recently removed from an active account you do not own.

Is the tool free? What do you keep?

Free, no sign-up, up to 80 checks a day. The name is only used to check its format and suggest variations; it is not kept or linked to you.
